Dress Code

DRESS AND GROOMING

The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevents disruption, and minimizes safety hazards. Students are expected to come to school in clothes that are clean and neat, and to exhibit basic cleanliness and grooming that will not be a health or safety threat to them or to other students or staff. Although students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, and we respect students’ desire to express themselves in their clothing and grooming styles, we do not permit students to wear clothing with pictures, emblems, or writing that is lewd, offensive, vulgar, or obscene or that advertises or depicts tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any other substance that students are prohibited from having or using at school. The following district guidelines for dress should be followed at school and school sponsored events unless wearing a school purchased uniform for participation in a UIL event or activity sanctioned by the school administration.

Shorts for all students are acceptable as long as they are no shorter than fingertip length as measured when arms and fingers are fully extended at student’s sides. No spandex shorts, wind shorts, cut-offs with ragged edges showing, or tight fitting shorts are permitted.

Skirts and dresses for female students are acceptable as long as they are not shorter than fingertip length when measured as for shorts.

All shirts must have sleeves. Sleeveless shirts, including tank tops, spaghetti straps are not to be worn. Undergarments of any kind may not be visible.

Any garment, which permits excessive skin exposure/nudity or worn in a lewd manner is not acceptable. This includes but is not limited to bare midriffs, cut-off shirts, and fishnet type shirts, halter-tops, and low cut dresses and tops. Female students must wear tops long enough to cover the midriff when arms are raised to shoulder height.

Pants and slacks may have holes in them; however the holes must be below mid-thigh when standing and must not be excessive in exposure. Holes that have been patched above mid-thigh will not be accepted.

Garments that resemble lingerie or any type of sleepwear including house shoes or slippers may not be worn.

No hats, caps or other head coverings may be worn or allowed in the building during the instructional day.

Shoes, boots, or sandals may be worn. House shoes, house slippers, etc. are prohibited.

Hair should in no way obstruct vision. Disruptive hairstyles or colors will not be permitted. Male students’ hair must leave the ear lobes visible and may not come below the neckband of a standard Tee-shirt as measured when hair is combed or is hanging straight down at the sides and in back. They also may not wear ponytails. Sideburns should be no lower than the ear lobes. Facial hair is not permissible.

Earrings will be permitted in ears for female and male students. Male students may wear one stud in each ear. Female students may wear a small stud in the nose. For all students, no other visible body or facial piercing or spacers will be allowed.

No visible tattoos will be permitted.

No sunglasses worn in the building unless a written prescription is provided to the office.

Wallet chains and gang styled jewelry capable of being used as a weapon are prohibited.

Excessive jewelry is not allowed.

Pocketknives/knives are prohibited.

Oversized clothing such as sagging jeans, shorts, and slacks as well as oversized shirt and/or athletic apparel are prohibited. Slacks, jeans, and shorts must fit and be worn at the waist.

Contact lenses with designs or colors that distort the natural look of the eyes are not permitted. The principal or in conjunction with the sponsor, coach or other person in charge of an extracurricular activity, may further regulate the dress and grooming of students who participate in the activity. The principal’s judgment will be final in the interpretation of dress code violations. If your child comes to school wearing clothes that violate the dress code or in any other way violates our dress and grooming standards, she or he will be placed in in-school suspension until she or he is in compliance. We will make efforts to notify you as soon as possible, and if the student changes clothes or otherwise comes into compliance with the dress and grooming standards, she or he will return to regular classes immediately.
